Stone's IRS is always something to look forward to. Although so far this year, Russian River Supplication and Temptation have made me most excited to run out to the store. I guess the same can be said for Pliny and Blind Pig.

we will be getting pure hoppiness VERY rarely, if ever. It was kind of a fluke that we got it, but it looks like if some comes up to LA again, we might be so lucky.

I still have a little bit of blind pig, if you come in and say hi, i'll grab one from in back for you. (I should be getting pliny as soon as it comes down here too!)

From Head Brewer Mitch Steele:

"The Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale is a Strong Golden Belgian style ale highly hopped with American hops (Ahtanum, Amarillo and Simcoe). The beer pours pale golden with a thick and creamy white head of foam. The aroma is full of depth: nuances of pepper, clove, and banana from the Belgian yeast strain, and the resiny citrus notes from the American hops blend together nicely to provide a complex aromatic character. The taste is spicy, hoppy and fruity, with a very dry and a pleasant bitter end. The bitterness lingers nicely, and provides a refreshing finish!"

Super Freak sounds interesting. Can't believe I didn't go to this festival. The lineup looked amazing. For the most part, I've only tried sour beers from the bottle. You don't see much on taps around here, I'm sure it makes a big difference. Nor on cask, I bet that would be amazing. The occasional Jolly Pumpkin cask makes its way to Naja's or Beechwood BBQ, but I've never had a chance to try it.

I read your post on the Sour Fest, it sounded great. Kriek is something I'd really like to try more of. It seems like there are a ton of framboises out there, but I hardly ever see any good krieks on the shelves besides Lindemans. Guess I need to hang out in San Diego more often.

I would love to try more sour stuff from Lost Abbey. I think I tried their Amazing Grace, I really enjoyed that.

Where are the best places to get a beer in SF?

Also, I'm curious of what factors are important to you when you pick a place to go. Specials, awesome selection, proximity to other bars, close to home? What is the one beer place that you always recommend to people?

Sorry to respond so late, but I really liked the Hanssen's Kriek. Another favorite was Green Flash Super Freak which I think people seemed to not like, but I thought it was cool being a sour hoppy belgian pale ale... I mean, where else are you going to get that?

Oh yeah, the Lost Abbey Sinner's Blend was awesome too... it was like dark rich beer meet Red Poppy.

Hey guys, I'm Kevin. I'm 23 and I live in Orange (moving to Tustin soon). I am currently a technical sales engineer. My current favorite style is IPAs, the hoppier the better.

I have been home brewing for a little while now, and still manage to spend all my money on beer, imagine that! I have an APA, Cali Common and a Cream Ale that I brewed on tap at my house (4 tap kegerator) right now.

You can still find a bunch of bottles of Dorado at Hollingshead's Deli in Orange. If I remember correctly from a discussion about this on BA, they bottled it last at the beginning of the year, so it's getting up there in age right now for an IPA. Personally I wouldn't buy one but some people like how those DIPA's turn barleywine-esque after a while.

Although their beer coverage has been a bit shoddy in the past, these days I find myself going straight for the Food section every Wednesday morning.

A couple weeks ago they had a great article about cask ale, and it's increasing popularity in LA.

Plus, they had a shout out to my homebrew club, Pacific Gravity!

http://www.latimes.com/news/la-fo-beer25-2008jun25,0,633228.story

Anyone been over to the Pint yet to check out Phil's new engines? Last time I went they had Stone Vanilla Bean Porter and Stone IPA with coriander. Both were fantastic.

I had their Big Eye IPA with ginger at the Pizza Port Real Ale Fest last month. That stuff was goood. Coronado had something down there with ginger too, but I liked the Ballast Point more. I think there should be more beers with ginger in them, seems to me that spicy works really well with super hoppy.

Hey, what's up Alex, good to see you on here.

I'm Dave, and I'm a moderator here on the forums. I'm 24 and just got into drinking good beer about 2 1/2 years ago. Before that, college was mostly Miller High Life (I'm not embarrassed to admit it. You've gotta know the worst before you can appreciate the best). I went to UCSB, so I picked up a love for Firestone, especially the Double Barrel, and it makes me happy that I can find it in just about any supermarket in Southern California.

Right now, I'd say my favorite styles are Sour beers and Gueuzes, even though I'm not too sure how to spell Gueze. I think the first way is right, though.

That lineup might get me there next week for the first time. 2 of the best beers I've ever had were that Victory at Sea coffee imperial coffee porter and the Brother Levonian Saison. Too bad no Sculpin IPA... I imissed out on that when it was released and heard it was awesome.

Hi, I'm Alex. I do the beer buying for Red Carpet Wine. I've been getting more and more into beer for a while now, and am falling pretty strong! I love working with it and am always on the lookout for something new.
